If you do not count working to help pay the bills as "extracurricular" I'd say for for my self and children, "extracurricular definitely came in second.

That sounds about right. You did have some students whose hobbies overlapped with their academics, but most students had lives outside of work/academics. Besides, students have long had a reputation for activities other than academics. Look at the complaints about students since the Middle Ages. They were all drunks, noisy, pranksters, rowdies and so on.
