That sounds like a terrible book to study, but I would have loved reading A Canticle for Liebowitz in high school! Rarely was our required reading was ever something I enjoyed, and I was a bookworm.
Speaking of Halley's comet, it is halfway around (at the aphelion), which is kind of mind-blowing to me, as I recall thinking how incredibly long it was between appearances.
Giving this to my kids and friends kids to read. Thank you for putting it down in print. One of my kids just finished college apps. And your perspective/advice is basically what we taught them. As a result neither is too stressed about college apps. That doesn't mean the process was easy, but it also didn't cause any hand-wringing angst.
I would add one additional point -- we told our kids not to apply to a safety school if they didn't want to go there. Better to take a gap year and try again later than to go some place that makes you miserable while wasting money.
I'm so glad I went to college before extracurricular activities were important for getting in (or at least as far as I knew).

This was great! More often than not, I agree with your take, but this one was delightful to boot!
I have a colleague with a son who's been filling out college essays. I'm going to forward this to him. Thanks!
