The origin of the nickname actually starts with a Stanislaw Lem story about some chipper aliens called the Steelypips ("we have no fear, no spats in our vats, no rules, no schools, no gloom, no evil influence on the moon"). Kate owned the domain "steelypips.org," which was the original home for my blog, and I jokingly referred to our house as "Chateau Steelypips." When we were looking for a nom du Net for our future baby, somebody suggested "SteelyKid," and we liked the sound of that. "The Pip" followed naturally from that, giving the pair of them a kind of superhero-and-sidekick sound.
