I picked up a bunch of new subscribers yesterday, I think thanks to a plug in Matt Reed’s column at Inside Higher Ed. This kind of thing is the exact reason I do these recaps of stuff I’ve written during the week…
Me on Substack:
— News Aliasing: One of the reasons why following current events on social media makes us crazy is that that time scales don’t really match.
— Struggling With Sincerity: Some thoughts after reading a bunch of college admissions essays that were published in the New York Times. This mostly made me glad I don’t work in Admissions.
—Alternatives for Undecideds: The pieces that Reed linked, on how some students who struggle finding their way in college would be better served if there were a non-college path for them to take.
—Prestige TV Is a Bit Much: A bit of “Old Man Yells at Cloud,” cultural commentary.
Links Dump:
—Fighting Like Taliban: This is from a few weeks back, but obviously has been brought to mind by recent events.
—So you’re going to be a new professor: Solid advice from Dan Drezner, though I was amused at the one about having graded assignments in the first half of the term. That’s highly discipline-specific, and not much of a problem for STEM fields where we tend to have a graded assignment in the first half of the first week.
—The Number Ones: Prince’s “Batdance”: The absolute pinnacle of cocaine-addled 1980’s batshit craziness.
Pseudo-Random Photo of the Week:
This cat was wandering along the bike path near the casino in Schenectady when I went down there for a photo hike a couple weekends ago, and having taken a cat photo I’m obliged to post it, because Internet.
Pseudo-Random Song of the Week:
I drove the kids over to Vermont yesterday to meet up with a friend from college at a park there, so it’s natural to post one of the all-time great driving songs. This is one that I’ll back up and play a second time when it comes on in the car. Pretty good video, too.
And that’s the week that was. Here are some buttons:
And if you want to mock my taste in driving songs, the comments are open.
