The last time-in-review post came in the middle of a week, so I skipped last weekend, but there’s been enough stuff since then that it’s worth a recap post.
Me on Substack:
— Technological Progress and the Flying Car Problem: When people talk about the slowing of progress, it’s not clear to me what expected rate it should be compared to.
— Inflation-Adjusted Scholarship: There’s a tension between the idea that faculty research isn’t sufficiently respected and the steadily increasing requirements for tenure and promotion.
— Covid in Review: One star, would not recommend.
— Re-reading Sandman: A Netflix-inspired look back at the classic comic series.
— Answering the Small Questions: In which I’m frustrated by #discourse around “Asking the Big Questions.”
Me Elsewhere:
— How Clocks Created Earth’s First Global Supply Chain in the 1700s – And Keep GPS Alive Today on the History Unplugged podcast: A fun interview recorded quite a while ago, talking about the history of timekeeping.
— From tick tock to TikTok: how humans keep track of time at Physics Today: A review of A Brief History of Timekeeping.
Links Dump:
— Failure to Cope “Under Capitalism” by Clare Coffey: This complaint about the overextension of politics was widely shared and justly so.
— Barack Obama Was a Successful President by Noah Smith: Sometimes you need to state the obvious.
— Fusion Turns Up the Heat by Matthew Zepf: The latest milestone on the road to commercial fusion power, just a few decades away…
— ‘I didn’t really learn anything’: COVID grads face college, by Collin Binkley: I’m really looking forward to the new academic year. Really.
— Walking the World: Liverpool, Leicester, and a little bit of London by Chris Arnade: The latest photo travelogue.
Pseudo-Random Photo of the Week:
Covid put a big hit on my conditioning, but I’m easing back into exercising, and decided to vary things up by speding a while shooting baskets in a local park.
Pseudo-Random Song of the Week:
SteelyKid is really into this band, so we’re going to see them when they play Albany in a couple of weeks. They’ve started running radio spots for the concert, which made me think of them, and this is an all-time great sing-along while driving too fast late at night.
And that’s the usual bunch of stuff. If you like any of it, here’s a button to get more:
