I wasn’t sure whether we’d actually conclude the (re)watch of the Ocean’s movies after doing 8 and 11 last weekend, but Friday night both kids were like “We’re watching Ocean’s Twelve, right?” So, it was pretty straightforward:
Ocean’s Twelve:
This was a re-watch for SteelyKid, first time for The Pip, and as a result SteelyKid enjoyed it way more. There are a lot more jokes in this one that don’t play for the tween/teen demo; SteelyKid laughed at some because they were familiar as things that were supposed to be funny, but The Pip was kind of confused about a lot of it.
This continues to be very entertaining— the caper antics are great— but fundamentally flawed because of the structure of the plot.
Ocean’s Thirteen:
Again, a re-watch for SteelyKid, who spent the first quarter of the movie saying “That’s important!” every time something happened that would be significant later, until The Pip and I demanded a stop because everything in the movie is important. It’s a nice demonstration of how tightly plotted this is, though, somewhat in contrast to the second.
Other stray note: The kids were really digging the score for these. Another example of how well-made these are, in every detail.
Anyway, that’s our (re)watching for the week. It’s not at all clear what will happen next weekend— the Venom sequel is coming out, which is something SteelyKid will want to see but very much not The Pip’s thing, so there’s a decent chance that I’ll be taking SteelyKid to the drive-in solo while Kate does something else with The Pip. Or maybe we’ll stay home and watch something else.
