Another week, another couple of movies with the kids:
Looper:
Friday night, the kids didn’t have a veryconcrete idea of what to watch, so asked to just scroll through recommendations on a streamer. This popped up on Netflix, and to my surprise, they jumped at it.
This is a time-travel story, and as such makes very little sense, but time travel stories are fundamentally about vibes more than plot, and it does a good job there. I had forgotten that this was a Rian Johnson film until the credits, but that totally makes sense. Which, in turn, makes me want Knives Out 2 to get here…
Murder on the Orient Express:
We had another round of scrolling-through-recommendations on Saturday, with no real success, but SteelyKid did express an interest in watching a mystery movie. This was the first such that came to mind, and we got them to agree.
This ended up working out pretty well because it’s fundamentally a pretty silly movie— I’m sorry I didn’t snap a picture of Branagh’s ludicrous mustache. Everything about it is about 10% over the top, but that made it kind of fun. About two-thirds of the way through, SteelyKid correctly deduced (and loudly announced) the correct solution to the mystery, and got to feel smug about that.
I hear that Death on the Nile isn’t quite as good, but also that it has a tragic backstory for the ludicrous mustache, so we’ll keep that in mind for a future Movie Night.
(I’ve tried unsuccessfully to pitch Kelly’s Heroes a few times now, in honor of the late Donald Sutherland, but to no avail. I’ll keep trying, though, despite the negative waves…)
I did do a little biking-to-nowhere this week, during which I watched a bit more of The Witcher and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but I’m nowhere near the end of either. If you want to hear about those when I finish, here’s a button:
And if you have thoughts on mystery movies for future viewing, leave a comment:
