I thought we might sneak in a third movie this week, because the kids had Thursday off for Yom Kippur, but they had enough homework to do that we didn’t do a mid-week movie, just the usual Friday and Saturday:
Ocean’s Eight:
This came up in the recommendations on HBO Max, and SteelyKid jumped at it, having watched the Soderbergh trilogy earlier. This is the all-female spin-off, with Sandra Bullock as the sister of George Clooney’s character, and Cate Blanchett playing the Brad Pitt role. The nominal connection between the movies is really tenuous and unnecessary. It’s a fun, lightweight caper movie, though, and both kids really enjoyed it.
Ocean’s Eleven:
SteelyKid and I watched this last year at a time when The Pip was out on the movie night concept, but after the success of the spin-off, we went back to the first of the modern series. This movie is so damn good— everything of Soderbergh’s is at least interesting, but here everything clicks perfectly. The cast is amazing, the script is terrific, it’s just a fantastically entertaining movie.
I’m not sure if we’ll end up doing to other two Soderberghs this weekend (which are both very good, but not quite to the level of the first). I may try to talk them into some other caper films instead, just for variety. Or they may latch onto something else in the meantime— it’s really hard to predict.
This went out late today because I had to get out early for a bike ride with folks from work, and then with one thing and another didn’t get around to writing until after dinner. Anyway, here are the usual buttons:
And if you’d like to recommend caper movies to watch with the kids, the comments will be open.
