Despite school being closed for Veterans Day on Thursday (which you might think would’ve created an extra Movie Night), we only watched one movie with the kids this week. SteelyKid was a little behind on homework Wednesday which ruled out the bonus movie night, and on Friday both kids were fired up to keep watching a Japanese cartoon called Assassination Classroom; I didn’t want to join that nine episodes in, so I left them to it and went down to the basement to watch stuff there (the finale of a show discussed below, then the first episode of the new season of Locke and Key).
The Sting:
That left just Saturday, and while playing poker before dinner (at the request of SteelyKid, who likes shuffling and dealing the cards), I suggested the 1973 Redford-and-Newman classic The Sting. Kate had never seen it before, so we all watched it together.
This is really a terrifically well-done movie, though of course very much of its time. Asked for a review afterwards, SteelyKid said “It was a good movie, but parts were too slow.” They did enjoy the poker scene, though.
Bonus Streaming Media Content: Only Murders in the Building:
It was a week of craptastic weather so I spent a bunch of time riding the stationary bike in the basement, and thus finished Only Murders in the Building:
This is the Steve Martin/ Martin Short/ Selena Gomez show on Hulu about a group of true-crime podcast fans who start poking into the death of another tenant in their swanky Manhattan apartment building. It’s a weird combination of “highly polished” and “seemingly effortless”— it’s got very clever writing and slick production, but also feels very loose and fun, like a bunch of crazy-talented people just spontaneously decided to put on a show.
I don’t think it’s especially profound, and it’s too of-the-current-moment for it to age well, but it’s very enjoyable. If you’ve got Hulu, definitely check it out.
And that’s this week in media consumption. Here are the usual buttons:
And the comments will be open if you’ve got suggestions for the next thing I should watch while exercise biking.
