All right, I’m giving in and doing the Substack thing. This is I think the fifth different blog-like-thing I’ve set up; more if you count platform changes. That dates back to my original book log in 2001, which was hand-rolled HTML.
I didn’t want to re-use “Uncertain Principles,” having run that through the full lifespan of Scienceblogs.com. “Counting Atoms” as a blog name is something I had in mind for a while; it’s a reference to a research project I used to have going on (though it’s kind of moribund now), but also a reasonably good metaphor for the general activity of blogging: an open-ended process of focusing on minutia that could really go on for as long as you let it.
The idea here is to use this as a space for some stuff that’s ill-served by Twitter threads, but doesn’t entirely fit the parameters of my intermittent blogging for Forbes. This will include stuff about higher education, pop culture, a bit of politics, and whatever other random shiny things seem worth writing about. I could use my own site for that, but having gotten out of the habit of regular blogging, a change of platform seems a decent spur to actually writing more stuff on a regular basis. I’ll keep that for more personal stuff, and official book announcements and the like.
If you know my past stuff and think this might be of interest, well, here’s a big subscribe button:
We’ll see where it goes from here…
