On Recent Silence
Sadly, it's not because I achieved my dream of becoming an immature Lotto millionaire...
It’s been a couple of weeks since I posted anything here. This was not exactly intended— I had a couple of things open in tabs that I was pondering responses to— but it was, in fact, a deliberate choice.
For quite a few years now I’ve had a neck/shoulder issue that gets aggravated by too much time at the computer typing. This is particularly irksome given my chosen line of work, which is like 77% sitting at computers typing, but it is what it is, and I work around it. When it gets cranked up, I take steps to reduce my computer time, which eventually includes “Don’t write anything on the blog, you idiot…”
A couple of weeks back it got really bad, to the point where I was cutting down on day-job work. The proximate cause of this seems like it may have been replacing the pillows I sleep on— the old ones were completely shot, so the new ones were thicker, changing the angle of my neck when I slept. At least, there’s a correlation between the timing of the change in bedding and the increase in neck pain. and the pain started getting better around the time I shifted the new pillows around.
(The possible confounder is that the improvement also coincided with my return to playing pick-up basketball at lunchtime. So maybe it’s just more regular exercise loosening things up, or maybe it’s a combination of the two, or all down to some third thing that I’m not aware of. This is why I’m not in medical research.)
Anyway, the upshot is that if you’ve ever wondered how old I am, the answer is “I Suffered a Debilitating Injury from Sleeping Wrong” Years Old.
This is, as I said, improving somewhat, so I hope to ease back into more normal writing activity, including posting stuff here. This blog is kind of the lowest priority on the list of return-to-normal operations, though, so it might be a bit. Happily, the current #discourse is mostly dominated by Shit I’d Rather Not Talk About, so I’m not feeling especially twitchy about being unable to share my Takes.
And as a reward for putting up with this self-indulgent noodling, here’s a song I heard on the radio yesterday that I like quite a bit:
So, yeah. Stuff. Also: things. If you want to be among the first to know when I’m blogging again, here’s a button:
If you’d like to commiserate or compliment my musical tastes, the comments will be open:
Hope you get better quickly! I knew I reached middle age when I pulled a muscle in my rib cage which was sore for a week... by looking left. Apparently, looking left can now cause issues...
I'm about 10 years younger and occasionally sneeze wrong. Not looking forward to the days that just sleeping will do me in.
